Breast Imaging: Introduction to BI-RADS

BI-RADS Category 3: Probably benign
  • What action is required?: {{c1::Short interval follow-up, typically 6 months.}}
  • If a benign-appearing lesion demonstrates {{c2::two to three}} years of stability it can be considered {{c3::benign (BI-RADS 2)::BI-RADS category}}
Extra Info
BI-RADS 3 is never appropriate for screening mammography!
BI-RADS 3 is reserved for baseline exams.

After 12 months of stability it is acceptable to lengthen the follow-up interval to one year. If a comparison is available and a finding is new or increased but otherwise meets criteria for BI-RADS 3 then biopsy is usually appropriate.

These cards are based on a text that uses the terminology of the fifth edition of the BI-RADS atlas, which was released in 2013.
