What is agarose
Back
- The polysaccharide ingredient in agar, and is derived from seaweed.
- Purified agarose is in powdered form and is insoluble in water at room temp, however it dissolves in boiling water.
- When it cools it undergoes polymerization. rather than staying dissolved, the sugar polymers cross-link with each other, causing the solution to 'gel' into a semi solid matrix.
- the strucutre of the gel forms a 3D lattice strucutre with small pores randomly placed pores throughout the gel.
- throught these pores DNA molecules will migrate.
