pleural effusion 
  • definition → A buildup of fluid between the tissues that line the lungs and the chest 
    • fluid in pleural space
  • 2 types determined by Light's criteria 
    • exudative or transudative 
  • if one of these three criteria is met, then the effusion is exudative 
    • pleural fluid protein:serum protein {{c1::>0.5}}
    • pleural fluid LDH:serum LDH {{c1::>0.6}}
    • pleural fluid LDH > 2/3 upper limit of normal serum LDH → around {{c2::200}}
