pleural effusion
- definition → A buildup of fluid between the tissues that line the lungs and the chest
- fluid in pleural space
- 2 types determined by Light's criteria
- exudative or transudative
- if one of these three criteria is met, then the effusion is exudative
- pleural fluid protein:serum protein {{c1::>0.5}}
- pleural fluid LDH:serum LDH {{c1::>0.6}}
- pleural fluid LDH > 2/3 upper limit of normal serum LDH → around {{c2::200}}
