Features of Art and Architecture of the Gupta Empire (319 AD - 540 AD)

The Gupta period witnessed a tremendous progress in the field of art, science and literature and on account of this it has been called “a golden age”.
A few scholars even call this period a period of renaissance.


1. Buddhist Art:
  • Continued growth of the Ajanta School (Theme: Buddha's life) was accompanied by the emergence of Bagh School (Hoshangabad in Madhya Pradesh). In this cave-walls were decorated (painted) in local themes.
  • The mural paintings of Ajanta mostly illustrate the life of the Buddha as depicted in the Jataka stories.
2. Evolution of Art Styles:
  • Nagara and Dravidian styles of art evolved during this period.
  • There was no influence of Gandhara style.
3. Sculptures and Images:
  • Metal and stone images of Buddha, Shiva, and Vishnu are reported from a number of places.
  • Images of God appeared for the first time.
4. Gupta Period Paintings:
  • The paintings of the Gupta period are seen at Bagh caves near Gwalior.
5. Architecture
  • Stupa and cave construction reduced and temple construction (Nagara styled)  picked up

Extra or usage
  • But it should be remembered that there was no dark period before the Gupta rule. Therefore the cultural progress witnessed during the Gupta period may be called the culmination of Indian intellectual activities.
