Motor Innervation: Spinal accessory nerve (CN11)

In posterior triangle of neck
• Sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) separates neck into anterior and
posterior triangles
• Nerve enters posterior triangle from behind SCM at middle of its posterior
border Enters beneath trapezius muscle which it innervates
• Injury: chronic aching of shoulders, inability to actively abduct the shoulder to
>80 degrees and wasting of trapezius muscle dropped shoulder, paresthesias in
arm
• Erb’s point: spinal accessory, great auricular, lesser occipital, transverse
cervical
