Mechanism of action: ice crystals form in extracellular space, water leaves
cell through osmosis and dehydrates cell. Water in cell freezes and this
crystallization expands and breaks cell membrane.
• Rapid freezing more effective than slow freezing as it causes more
intracellular and extracellular damage
• Freezing also causes vasoconstriction ischemic necrosis
• Thawing compensatory vasodilation
