topoisomerase (only in
Eukaryotes) relieve supercoiling:
- Topoisomerase {{c1::I}}: cuts one DNA strand, relieves strain, and reattaches (ligates) the strand
- corresponding enzymes in bacteria are
called {{c2::gyrases}} ... good targets for antibacterial drugs
- Topoisomerase {{c1::I}}: cuts one DNA strand, relieves strain, and reattaches (ligates) the strand
- Topoisomerase {{c1::II}}: cuts both DNA strands and ligates both after unwinding (necessary for circular DNA)
→ antibiotic {{c3::Ciprofloxacin}} (a {{c4::fluoroquinolone}}) inhibits
bacterial {{c2::gyrase}} but does not inhibit human enzymes
*{{c4::fluoroquinolones}} are used to treat infections of skin, lungs, airways, bones,
joints, urinary tract infections
