moving apical to basal:
- tight junctions/zonulae occludens: prevent passive flow of material between cells with system of ridges, but adhesions not strong; paired with adherent juctions
- adherent junctions/ zonulae adherens: are immediately below tight junctions to stabilize and strengthen the occulding band, help hold cells together
- desmosomes: spot-like (not circular) junction between cells. bind intermediate filaments of cell cytoskeleton on inside of cell to form very strong attachment points to supplement zonulae adherens. very important for epithelial integrity
- gap junctions: patch of multiple connexons between neighboring cell membranes. not strong, but serve as intercellular channel for molecule transport.
- hemidesmosomes: bind epithelial cells to basal lamina
