How do the following laboratory values typically change in patients with osteomalacia?
Calcium: {{c1::decreased or normal}}
Phosphate: {{c1::decreased}}
Alkaline phosphatase: {{c1::increased}}
Extra
- defect in mineralization caused by low vitamin D.
- Ca2+ levels may normalize due to secondary hyperparathyroidism
- malabsorption due to celiac leads to vitamin D deficiency
- low calcium and phosphorus uptake leads to secondary hyperparathyroidism, which increases calcium absorption in bone and kidney, causing high alkaline phosphatase and normal calcium but lowered phosphate.
