In multiple myeloma, neoplastic plasma cells produce {{c1::IL-1}}, which stimulates {{c2::osteoclast}} maturation that will lead to bone resorption

In this role, IL-1 is known as Osteoclast Activating Factor

this results in lytic lesions on x-ray ("punched out")
