Fields:

Front
Spinothalamic tract
Back
- spine TO thalamus (brain structure)
  • ascending tract --> spine to brain --> sensory
- found in lateral column of white matter
- sends non-localized sensations (ex. pain, temperature) from enture body to brain
- composed of 3 neurons:
  • 1st order peripheral (PNS) neuron goes from stimuli to dorsal horn and synapses with 2nd order interneuron
  • 2nd order interneuron (CNS) decussates at level of spinal cord where sensation was felt, interneuron enters white matter tract, travels up the spinothalamic tract to the thalamus where it synapses with the 3rd order neuron
  • 3rd order interneuron (CNS): carries signal from thalamus to cerebral cortex for sensation
- decussation occurs at the level of the spinal cord where the sensation was felt
