During an elective list, you are about to call for the next patient (an inguinal hernia) when the on-call registrar tells you that there is an unstable trauma patient who needs an emergency splenectomy. There are no other theatres available, and you have to cancel your elective hernia operation. This patient has been cancelled multiple times before, and the nursing staff in the day procedure unit ask that you come and speak to her because she is furious and abusing the staff.
