3 major parts- braincase, jaws, and hyoid
Braincase
-can be cartilage/bone
-saw these bones in lab
- basioccipital, supraoccipital (if it's bone it's dermal bone)
Jaws
Palatoquadrate/Meckel's Cartilage fuses to skull and becomes enclosed in dermal bone, this is NOT endochondral bone replacement, the cartilage is lost as the membrane is replaced with bone
the only exception is the articular bone- is is ossified meckel's cartilage
Hyoid
-saw in lab
-involved in tongue support in fishes
-involved in muscle attachment in mammals (tongue muscles)
