Metabolic Alkalosis

generation/initiation of process

*caused by a process which results in one or more of the following conditions...

→ net loss of {{c1::hydrogen (H+)}} and {{c2::chloride (Cl-)}} ions via GI tract (e.g., vomiting, nasogastric drainage) or kidney (e.g., hyperaldosteronism)

→ {{c3::alkali}} loading (usually requires concomitant renal insufficiency)

→ disproportionate loss of {{c2::chloride}} with increased {{c4::HCO3-}} absorption by the kidney (diuretics, mineralocorticoid excess, idiopathic chloride-resistant alkalosis which can occur with severe potassium depletion)

maintenance phase
*three causes of metabolic alkalosis...

- {{c6::chloride}} depletion: most common cause

- hypo{{c6::kalemia}}

- abnormally increased {{c5::mineralcorticoid/aldosterone}} activity

*reduced effective blood volume is NOT another cause...not a standalone cause of (contraction) alkalosis
