Why is HbS so common?
Back
Mixed HbA:HbS RBCs have properties that protect heterozygotes from malaria parasites. Possibly due to quick removal of infected cells or because infected HbA:HbS cells damage the parasites.

Either way heterozygotes confer advantage or homozygotes:
  • HbA homozygotes succumb to malaria
  • HbS homozygotes die early because of sickle cell anemia
