What are the fundamentals of the fluid mosaic model of membrane organization?
Back
DYNAMIC, NOT UNIFORM throughout cell
The lipid bilayer is a thin 2D fluid:
  1. Mosaic of lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates
  2. Non-covalent interactions
  3. Lipids and proteins diffuse laterally through membrane (lipids ~ 10-8 to 10-9 cm2/s, integral membrane proteins ~ 10-9 to 10-11 cm2/s)
  4. Asymmetric composition: lipids (dynamic symmetry), peripheral and integral proteins (absolute symmetry), glycosylation (lipids and proteins on outer membrane)
