What are the differences between Parkinson's and Huntington's disease?
Back
- Parkinson’s disease: hypokinetic, caused by loss of dopaminergic neurons in the pars compacta of the substantia nigra → reduced activity of the direct pathway and increased activity of the indirect pathway → less activation of the motor cortical areas » slowed movement (bradykinesia).
- Huntington’s disease: hyperkinetic, due to loss of GABAergic and cholinergic neurons in the striatum → disinhibit neurons in the thalamus via indirect pathway → increase the activity the motor cortex → choreiform movements.
