Transmural infarction of the small bowel is most commonly caused by:
thrombosis/embolism of the superior mesenteric artery - associated with atrial fibrillation, vasculitides (polyarteritis nodosa), atherosclerotic disease of the SMA or abdominal aorta (obvi)
Thrombosis of the mesenteric vein - polycythemia vera
