What is gallstone ileus?
Back
Obstruction of the small bowel by gallstone.
Typically a a fistula must form between the gallbladder and small bowel in order to allow passage of a sufficiently sized stone, which then gets lodged in the ileocecal junction.
An important radiographic finding is air in the biliary tract - evidence of fistulization between the biliary system and the GI tract.
