- Droplet transmitted
- multiplies in the upper respiratory tract and is transmitted through direct contact with saliva or respiratory secretions. Mumps virus can also be transmitted by fomites. The incubation period for this illness is 16 to 18 days following exposure
- fever, headache, muscle aches, loss of appetite, and swelling of the salivary glands under the ears. This can be on one side or bilateral.
- Vaccination before an exposure occurs is important. The vaccine is not effective post exposure
