- Definition - removed for placement of utility line or for other construction, sides of excavation can collapse, trapping a worker. Can result in entrapment.
- After collapse, the material is unstable. Pt cant be simply pulled out, they must be dug out after shoring has stabilized the sides of the excavation (attempts shouldnt be made until shoring is done)
- vibrations, personnel standing at edge or water washing away soild can result in secondary collpase.
- spoil pile is soild that has been removed from excavation and placed in a pile, avoid this material as it is unstable
- stay away from edge, shut down all equiptment around, stop or divert traffic if necessary to avoid any vibrations. make verbal contact with pt if possible
