PHARMACOTHERAPY – Canker Sores
• {{c3::Topical oral anesthetics}}: {{c1::indicated for temporary relief of pain}} associated
with RAS (e.g. {{c1::benzocaine 5% - 20%}} , {{c1::benzyl alcohol 0.05% - 0.1%, dyclonine 0.05% - 0.1%}})
• {{c3::Topical oral protectant}}s: {{c2::coat and protect ulcers, decrease friction against ulcer, temporary symptom relief}}
• Patch or dissolving disc placed on ulcer x {{c4::10 to 20 seconds}}; disc will remain in place until dissolved in {{c4::8 – 12 hours}} (e.g. {{c5::Canker Cover – menthol 2.5mg}})
Oral rinses: antiseptic rinse to promote lesion healing
• {{c6::Saline rinse}} 1 – 3 teaspoons of salt in 4 – 8 oz. of warm water
• Paste of {{c6::baking soda}} applied to lesions for a few minutes
Systemic analgesics: relieve discomfort; do not hold ASA at the lesion, due to chemical burn or tissue damage
