    • Transcription factor critical for development of eye, thyroid, urinary and reproductive organs
  • Use by pathologistss
    • PAX8 positive tumours:
      • Kidney
        • RCC (90%)
        • Renal oncocytoma (80%)
        • Nephrogenic adenoma
        • Nephroblastoma
      • Mullerian (but not mucinous)
        • Ovarian carcinoma
        • Endometrial adenocarcinoma (incl. endometrioid, serous, clear cell)
      • Thymus 
      • Thyroid
        • Thyroid anaplastic carcinoma and other thyroid tumours (Differentiates thyroid cancer PAX8+ from HNSCC PAX8-)
      • Can be positive in enteropancreatic neuroendocirne tumours (but not lung)
    • PAX8 negative tumours
      • Adrenal
      • Breast
      • GI (most)
      • Lung 
      • Prostate
