- Function
- Transcription factor critical for development of eye, thyroid, urinary and reproductive organs
- Use by pathologistss
- PAX8 positive tumours:
- Kidney
- RCC (90%)
- Renal oncocytoma (80%)
- Nephrogenic adenoma
- Nephroblastoma
- Mullerian (but not mucinous)
- Ovarian carcinoma
- Endometrial adenocarcinoma (incl. endometrioid, serous, clear cell)
- Thymus
- Thyroid
- Thyroid anaplastic carcinoma and other thyroid tumours (Differentiates thyroid cancer PAX8+ from HNSCC PAX8-)
- Can be positive in enteropancreatic neuroendocirne tumours (but not lung)
- PAX8 negative tumours
- Adrenal
- Breast
- GI (most)
- Lung
- Prostate
