Function / general
- Marker related to embyronic development (yolk sac)
- Mainly used for diagnosing germ cell tumours and liver tumours
- Overlal specific but not a sensitive marker
High serum levels in several conditions - see AFP tumour marker
Positive staining
- Yolk sac tumour (60%)
- Specific marker but less sensitive than gylpican 3
- Hepatocellular carcinoma (2-60%)
- Specific, but not sensitive
- Testis/ovary/GCT
- Seminoma
- Embryonal carcinoma
- Choriocarcinoma
- Gonadbolastoma
- Spermatocytic tumoru
- Teratoma
- Hepatobiliary
- Hepatoblastoma
- Cholangiocarinoma
- Metastatic adenocarcinomas to liver
