Summary: Yolk sac tumour marker (also seen in some HCC)

Function / general
  • Marker related to embyronic development (yolk sac)
  • Mainly used for diagnosing germ cell tumours and liver tumours
  • Overlal specific but not a sensitive marker
High serum levels in several conditions - see AFP tumour marker 

Positive staining
  • Yolk sac tumour (60%)
    • Specific marker but less sensitive than gylpican 3
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (2-60%)
    • Specific, but not sensitive
Negative staining
  • Testis/ovary/GCT
    • Seminoma
    • Embryonal carcinoma
    • Choriocarcinoma
    • Gonadbolastoma
    • Spermatocytic tumoru
    • Teratoma
  • Hepatobiliary
    • Hepatoblastoma
    • Cholangiocarinoma
    • Metastatic adenocarcinomas to liver
