BACKGROUND – Diarrhea
Definitions:
• Acute diarrhea: symptoms lasting {{c1::<14 days}}, managed with fluid, electrolyte, dietary intervention, and OTC agents
• Persistent diarrhea: symptoms lasting {{c1::14 days – 4 weeks}}
• Chronic diarrhea: symptoms lasting {{c1::>4 weeks}}
Etiology:
• Norovirus: {{c2::most common cause of diarrhea in adults, 90% of viral gastroenteritis}}
• Rotavirus: {{c2::50% of all-cause gastroenteritis worldwide}}
• Bacterial: {{c3::10% acute diarrhea illness in U.S., foodborne transmission}}
• Protozoal: {{c3::rare, self-treatment not indicated}}
