A single umbilical artery is the most common aberration of vessel number in the umbilical cord. It indicates an increased risk of congenital malformations in the fetus.
A single umbilical artery is seen in the following conditions:
- Twin pregnancy
- Gestational diabetes/Overt diabetes
- Epilepsy
- Oligohydramnios
- Polyhydramnios
- Preeclampsia
- Antepartum hemorrhage
It is associated with other conditions such as:
- Congenital malformation of the fetus
- Renal and genital anomalies
- Trisomy 18
Risks:
- Increased chance of abortion
- Fetal aneuploidy
- Prematurity
- IUGR
- Increased perinatal mortality
