A single umbilical artery is the most common aberration of vessel number in the umbilical cord. It indicates an increased risk of congenital malformations in the fetus.

A single umbilical artery is seen in the following conditions:

Twin pregnancy
Gestational diabetes/Overt diabetes
Epilepsy
Oligohydramnios
Polyhydramnios
Preeclampsia
Antepartum hemorrhage

It is associated with other conditions such as:

Congenital malformation of the fetus
Renal and genital anomalies
Trisomy 18

Risks:

Increased chance of abortion
Fetal aneuploidy
Prematurity
IUGR
Increased perinatal mortality
