A single umbilical artery is the most common aberration of vessel number in the umbilical cord. It indicates an increased risk of congenital malformations in the fetus.
A single umbilical artery is seen in the following conditions: 
  • Twin pregnancy
  • Gestational diabetes/Overt diabetes
  • Epilepsy
  • Oligohydramnios
  • Polyhydramnios
  • Preeclampsia
  • Antepartum hemorrhage 
It is associated with other conditions such as:
  • Congenital malformation of the fetus
  • Renal and genital anomalies
  • Trisomy 18
Risks:
  • Increased chance of abortion
  • Fetal aneuploidy
  • Prematurity
  • IUGR
  • Increased perinatal mortality
