Brazilian purpuric fever (BPF) caused by {{c1::Haemophilus aegypticus}} ({{c2::Koch-Weeks}} bacillus)
Extra
Recent DNA studies have shown that the bacillus is identical to non-capsulated H.influenzae and it is now named H.influenzae biotype aegypticus.
Lecture Notes
It is worldwide in distribution and causes:
  • A highly contagious form of conjunctivitis ('pink eye') which is especially common in the tropics and subtropics and may lead to epidemics. It responds to local sulphonamide or gentamicin administration.
  • Brazilian purpuric fever characterized by fever, purpura, and conjunctivitis which proceeds to fulminant septicemia in infants and children. It has a high fatality rate.
