Fields:

Front
Explain glycosylation in terms of ER modification.
Back
function: aids in P folding + determines P function (PTM)
many secreted and plasma mem Ps are sugar-modified = glycoproteins
process: glucose precusor catalyzed by glycosyltransferases --> glycans (chain of sugars) then transfered onto Ps
- glycans can be further modified after initial transfer
e.g. hemagglutinin (quarternary structure with homotrimer) optimizes the free-floating oligosaccharide precursor which binds to the synthesized peptide via oligasaccharyl transferase (while translation is ongoing)
- chaperones/oligosaccharide-binding Ps attach onto this complex to prevent premature/incorrect folding
- disulfide isomerase promotes S-S bond formation
