Facial Nerve
- Origin: Emerges from the brainstem between the {{c1::pons}} and {{c1::medulla}}.
- Functions:
- Controls {{c1::muscles of facial expression}}.
- Provides {{c1::taste}} sensation from the {{c1::anterior 2/3 of the tongue}}.
- Pathway:
- The nerve passes into the {{c1::petrous temporal bone}} and into the {{c1::internal auditory meatus}}.
- It then passes through the {{c1::facial canal}} and exits at the {{c1::stylomastoid foramen}}.
- It passes through the {{c1::parotid gland}} and {{c1::divides}} at this point (Note: It does not innervate the {{c1::parotid gland}}).
- Motor Fibre Functions:
- Its motor fibres innervate {{c1::orbicularis oculi}} to produce the {{c1::efferent arm of the corneal reflex}}.
- Surgical Considerations:
- In surgical practice, it may be injured during {{c1::parotid gland surgery}} or {{c1::invaded by malignancies of the gland}}, and a {{c1::lower motor neurone lesion on the ipsilateral side}} will result.
