- Oral mucosa
- The gingiva and the covering of the hard palate, termed the{{c1:: masticatory mucosa}}
- The oral mucous membrane lining the remainder of the oral cavity.
- The dorsum of the tongue, covered by {{c1::specialized}} mucosa
- The {{c1::gingiva }}is the part of the oral mucosa that covers the alveolar processes of the jaws and surrounds the necks of the teeth
- gingiva
- {{c2::marginal}}
- aka {{c3::free}}, {{c3::unatttached}}
- In ≅ {{c3::50%}} of cases its demarcated from the attached gingiva by the marginal groove (1mm wide)
- forms the {{c3::soft tissue wall}} of the healthy gingival sulcus
- separated from the tooth surface with a periodontal probe
- the {{c3::terminal edge}} of the gingiva surrounding the teeth
- {{c2::attached}}
- Is continuous with marginal gingiva
- firm, resilient and tightly bound to periosteum of alveolar bone.
- extends apically to the {{c4::mucogingival junction}} which separates it from the loose and movable alveolar mucosa.
- Clinically delineated by depth of the sulcus subtracted from width of the Keratinized gingiva
- gingival sulcus
- {{c6::shallow crevice}} or space around the tooth
- bounded by surface of tooth on one side and epithelium lining marginal gingiva on the other side
- V shaped; barely permits entrance of a periodontal probe.
- Sulcus depth can be accurately measured only {{c6::histologically}}
- Ideal conditions (only experimentally possible) depth = 0mm; histologically healthy human gingival sulcus mean depth ≅ {{c6::1.8mm}}
- Surrogate used clinically = {{c6::Probing depth}}; probing depth in healthy gingiva = {{c6::2-3}}mm
- Clinically filled with Gingival crevicular fluid
- Free {{c4::marginal gingival groove}}, if present, forms {{c4::coronal limit}}
- width
- {{c5::Marginal gingiva}} = Depth of sulcus
- {{c5::Attached gingiva}} = Keratinized gingiva – depth of sulcus (Free gingiva).
- {{c5::Gingival margin}} – most coronal part of the free or marginal gingiva.
- {{c5::Keratinized gingiva}} = Distance from gingival margin to MGJ
- {{c2::interdental}}
- In health it fills the gingival embrasure, which is the interproximal space apical to the tooth contact
- Can be pyramidal or can have a col shape
- Shape of the papillae varies according to {{c7::the dimension of the gingival embrasure}}
