What are the 5 cellular outcomes caused by viral infections?
Back
1) abortive = no progeny viruses produced
2) lytic = acute process where viral progeny released by lysis of cell = non-enveloped viruses
3) chronic, non-lytic = infected cells slowly release viral progeny, w/o cell death = enveloped viruses
4) latent = virus genome integrated into cell DNA, becomes dormant, & can 're-awake' at any time to produce progeny & then become quiescent again
5) transformation = virus causes cell to proliferate in uncontrolled manner (can lead to cancer)
