What are the indications for BMD testing with individuals >= 50 years old?
All women and men age >= 65 yo
Menopausal women, 50-64, with any clinical risk factors for fracture:
  • Fragility # > 40 yo
  • Prolonged glucocorticoid use (>= 3 mo of >= 7.5 mg daily)
  • High risk med use e.g. aromatase inhibitors, androgen dep therapy
  • Parental hip #
  • Vertebral # or osteopenia on GR
  • Current smoking
  • High EtOH intake
  • Low body weight (< 60 kg) or major weight loss (>10% of weight at age 25)
  • RA
  • Other disorders strongly associated with osteoporosis, including: primary hyperparathyroidism, T1DM, osteogenesis imperfecta, uncontrolled hyperthyroidism, hypogonadism, premature menopause (< 45 yo), Cushing disease, chronic malnutrition or malabsorption, chronic liver disease, COPD, chronic inflammatory conditions (e.g. IBD)
