Immediate complications
  • Bleeding: uterine atony, retained products, uterine perforation, AV malformation, placenta accreta (if prior c-section)
  • Cervical laceration
  • Pain
  • Drug reaction to anesthesia
Delayed complications
  • Bleeding: retained placenta, infection, uterine atony
  • Fever/ infection
  • Septic abortion
  • Pain: infections, retained placenta, hematometria
Typical side effects
  • Cramping
  • N/V
  • Bleeding
Rare but serious side effects
  • Cervical insufficiency
  • Ashermans syndrome (adhesions within uterine cavity --> amenorrhea, hypomenorrhea, infertiity, recurrent miscarriages, pelvic pain, mentrual irregularities)
  • PE, amniotic fluid embolism
  • Hysterectomy due to placenta accreta, perforation, lacerations
