What are some signs and symptoms of hypertensive emergency?
Cardiac
  • Heart failure exacerbation: de novo heart failure, flashpulmonary edema (dyspnea, crackles)
  • MI (chest pain, diaphoresis)
  • Aortic dissection (chest pain, asymmetric pulses)
Neurological
  • Hypertensive encephalopathy (headache, vomiting, confusion, seizure, blurry vision, papilledema)
  • Ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke (focal neuro deficits, altered mental status)
  • Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (seizures, headache, visual changes, altered mental status)
Renal (acute hypertensive nephrosclerosis)
  • AKI (azotemia, oliguria, edema)
  • Microhematuria
Opthalmic
  • Acute hypertensive retinopathy (blurry vision, decreased visual acuity, retinal flame hemorrhage, papilledema, Elschnig spots)
