A shunt used in cirrhosis with a low rate of encephalopathy is the {{c1::splenorenal}} shunt
Extra
You have to ligate a lot of vessels to make room for this (see ABSITE text below), but it allows for the varices to decompress because the spleen no longer drains into the portal system but now the renal vein (which goes to IVC)
This isn't used very often anymore
