- Prodrome:
- Fever, headache, coryza, N&D
- Initial presentation, Rash 2-5 days later:
- mild, fever in only 15–30%,
- cervical lymphadenopathy
- intensely red, ‘slapped cheek’ rash often with circumoral pallor (viraemic phase); spares nasal ridge
- By the time the rash develops, the viraemia has resolved and the child usually feels well
- Later:
- Diffuse macular erythema trunk and limbs - central clearing - lacy
- Reticulated
- On extensor surfaces, spares palms and soles
