MuscleName
Longissimus (iddupex3)
OccludedImage
Origin
Origin (inferior attachment):

Logissimus:
     Capitis: C4–T5 transverse processes
     Colli: T1–T5 transverse processes
Thoracis: L1–L5 transverse processes, sacrum, posterior iliac crest

The erector spinae comprise the iliocostalis, longissimus, and spinalis. They arise by a broad tendon from the posterior aspect of the iliac crest, the posterior aspect of the sacrum, the sacral and inferior lumbar spinous processes, and the supraspinous ligament.

Insertion
Insertion (superior attachment)"

Longissimus:
Capitis: mastoid process
Colli: C2-C6 transverse processes
Thoracis: T1–T12 transverse processes, last six ribs

"The longissimus muscles attach to (thoracic/cervical) transverse processes, ribs (portion between the tubercles and angles), and mastoid process."

(mnemonic: start with transverse process, work out mastoid and last six ribs)

The iliocostalis muscles attach to the angles of lower ribs and the cervical transverse processes.
The spinalis muscles attach to the spinous processes in the upper thoracic region and midcervical region, and to the skull.

Innervation
Innervation:

By dorsal rami of the respective spinal nerves in each region.

Actions
Action:

logissimus:
Thoracis and Cervicis act to extend and laterally flex Vertebral Column
Acting on one side, causes Lateral Flexion
Capitis extends and rotates the head toward one side

Together, these muscles extend the vertebral column and head.
Unilaterally, they bend the vertebral column laterally.
