Origin

Origin (proximal):

The 4 dorsal interosseous muscles are bipennate.

They arise by 2 heads from adjacent sides of the metacarpal bones.

Insertion

Insertion (distal):

Extensor expansion over First Phalanx of Finger II-IV on one side opposite midaxis of hand (Finger III)

On both sides of Finger III

(Each interosseous muscle inserts into the base of the proximal phalanx and into the aponeurosis that forms the extensor expansion of digits 2 through 4)

Innervation

Innervation:

Deep palmar branch of the ulnar nerve (C8 and T1).

Action:

Abducts fingers

Extend fingers at Interphalangeal Joints and

flex them at Metacarpophalangeal Joints
