Summarise the Chemistry behind Indicators
Back
Commit #130876
Indicators are generally weak acids or bases thus exist in a dynamic chemical equilibrium
- Indicators can follow the general formula HIn <--> H+ + In- (In is indicator)
- For example, let HIn be acidic (green) and In- basic (red)
- If the indicator is added to an acidic solution, according to LCP the reverse reaction will be favoured creating more HIn thus resulting in a greener solution
- If the Indicator is added to a basic solution, according to LCP the forward reaction will be favoured creating more In- thus resulting in a redder solution
