Unacceptable Specimens for PBFs
Incorrect Venipuncture
Slow/difficult draws or improperly mixed tubes means blood may not get exposed to EDTA in time
Small clots (microclots) or clumping platelets may affect patient results
You can’t tell this from the tube – you must make a PBF
Automated platelet count may be unexpectedly (falsely) decreased
But in case of obvious clots, you easily can tell by checking the tube
