Unacceptable Specimens for PBFs
Incorrect Venipuncture
  • Slow/difficult draws or improperly mixed tubes means blood may not get exposed to EDTA in time
  • Small clots (microclots) or clumping platelets may affect patient results
  • You can’t tell this from the tube – you must make a PBF
    • Automated platelet count may be unexpectedly (falsely) decreased
But in case of obvious clots, you easily can tell by checking the tube
