How do electrolytic cells work
Back
Commit #132593
When electrical power is applied to the cell, anions in the electrolyte solution move towards the positive (anode) electrode whilst cations move towards the negative electrode (cathode).
At the anode, oxidation occurs where anions lose electrons.
At the cathode, reduction occurs where the cations gain electrons.
Thus, the electrons flow through the circuit from the anode to cathode.
