In liver, it Metabolizes some of the drug, either inactivating it or excreting it into the bowel. When the blood comes through the portal vein from the gut to the liver, a proportion of it will be exposed to enzymes (drug metabolism), part of it will be metabolized, then be excreted through the bile, back into the gut.
