The Catholic Church’s response to the various reforming movements that swept across European Christendom began in the early sixteenth century. Although the name implies it, it is wrong to think of the movement as unified, reactionary, or focused entirely on early Protestantism. On the contrary, it was diverse, encompassing centralized decisions and ecclesial actions, the establishment of new religious orders, the emergence of highly influential mystics, and a renewal of devotional practices among the laity.
