Description
emerges from the ventral surface of the brainstem near the midline at the caudal end of the midbrain; courses through the lateral wall of the cavernous sinus and exits the middle cranial fossa by passing through the superior orbital fissure

motor supply to skeletal mm.: levator palpebrae superioris, superior rectus, medial rectus, inferior rectus, inferior oblique; preganglionic parasympathetic to ciliary ganglion, postganglionic parasympathetic via short ciliary nn.to: ciliary m. & sphincter pupillae m.
