The community mental health team
- Components of a psychiatry {{c1::multidisciplinary team (MDT)}} differ between services, depending on available resources. Some services have more extensive MDTs than others. A MDT can consist of the following – {{c1::psychiatrists,}} {{c1::nursing staff}}, {{c1::clinical psychologist,}} {{c2::occupational therapist,}} {{c3::social worker}}, {{c4::art therapist}} and a {{c5::secretary}}.
- In particular specialties (such as child and adolescent psychiatry, psychiatry of the elderly or care for eating disorders), MDTs may also include support workers, speech and language therapist and a dietician.
- A specialist perinatal MDT might consist of psychiatrists, clinical nurse specialist, clinical psychologist, occupational therapist, social worker, perinatal mental health midwife managers and a secretary.
- Ideally, there will also be a person responsible for the physical health of the patient, although in practice this is often the patient’s general practitioner, with speciality care involved as required.
- A person presenting to a psychiatric service, whether as an outpatient or an inpatient, will have a care plan drawn up to guide their treatment. A keyworker is assigned to ensure each aspect of their care is delivered.
