{{c4::Trendelenburg}} test: evaluates competency of {{c1::communicating veins}} and {{c1::saphenous system}}
the test evaluates two different points of filling. if the first point of filling is rapid it is a positive test for {{c2::incompetent communicating valves}}. if there is a sudden additional rapid filling, it is a positive test for {{c2::damaged saphenous valves}}. a normal response would be continued {{c3::SLOW}} filling about 35 seconds total.

possible results are positive-positive, positive-neg, and neg-neg
Extra
  • While supine, elevate leg to 90 degrees (drains blood)
  • Occlude great saphenous being (tourniquet or large BP cuff)
  • With vein still occluded, have patient stand up
    • Rapid filling = :positive test, incompetent communicating valves (valves cannot hold blood back)
  • Release saphenous occlusion at 20 seconds
    • Sudden additional rapid filling = positive test, damaged saphenous valves
    • Normal response = continued slow filling, 35 seconds total
  • Possible results: positive-positive, positive-negative, negative-negative
