{{c1::The stem is composed of the epidermis, cortex, xylem, phloem and vascular bundle.
- The epidermis, being the outermost layer, prevents water loss and provides protection from microorganisms.
- The cortex is an unspecialized cell layer thst sometimes stores food reserves.
- The xylem are transport tubes that bring up water from the roots.
- The phloem transports carbohydrates - usually from the leaves to other parts of the plant.
