Explain directionality of winds relative to the equator

Winds originating at the equator are fast and so move eastward as they head towards the North and South (earth spins slower than the winds).
Winds originating north and south of the equator are slow, and so move "westward" as they head towards the equator (earth spins faster than the winds)
