How has antibiotic resistance been developed by bacteria over time?
Back
- Since their discovery, antibiotics have been overused leading to anitibiotic resistance in many different types of bacterial species
- Bacteria have random mutations in their DNA
- One of these mutations may give them resistance to an antibiotics
- If an organism is treated with an antibiotic, only the bacteria with resistance will survive
- The population of the resistance bacteria increases, leading to large strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria over time, e.g. MRSA
