Squamous Cell Carcinoma


- Grading is based on degree of differentiation and keratinization
- {{c1::Well differentiated tumor}}: easily recognizable squamous epithelium, abundant keratinization, intercellular bridges are apparent, minimal pleomorphism, mitotic figures when present are at basal only
- {{c2::Moderately differentiated tumor}}: with focal keratinization, features are between well and poorly differentiated tumor
- {{c3::Poorly differentiated tumor}}: no to minimal keratinization, marked nuclear atypia, pathologist has difficulty to establish that the differentiation is squamous
- {{c4::Undifferentiated}}: no keratinization, with urge from the pathologist to request IHC stain d/t difficulty in diagnosing and confusion to determine where melanoma or carcinoma
